First-grade students are engaging in many multi-sensory activities to help remember those tricky “heart” words. Students first have to orthographically map the word to connect the parts of the word that are expected vs. the parts that are not expected. Students then use their red word screens and red crayons to make the word bumpy so they can use their fingers to trace over the word. By doing this, the students are able to feel the word while spelling! We are trying to engage as many multiple intelligences as we can for our many diverse learners.
